Veteran head coach Tim McCarty, architect of perhaps the second-greatest college football turnaround in the state of Kansas during his tenure at Tabor College, is in his second season as Kansas State’s assistant head coach and offensive line coach.

The native Kansan was named to his post on Dec. 8, 2005, and was among Head Coach Ron Prince’s first hires at Kansas State.

Considered to be a master motivator and an outstanding recruiter, McCarty turned a struggling offensive line into one that ended up helping Leon Patton set the K-State freshman rushing record and Josh Freeman set the K-State freshman passing record during the 2006 season.

McCarty also mentored a pair of players to postseason honors in year one. Senior Greg Wafford earned second team All-Big 12 honors from the Kansas City Star and honorable mention accolades from both the league’s coaches and The Associated Press, while freshman Nick Stringer was a freshman All-Big 12 and honorable mention freshman All-American pick by The Sporting News.

McCarty came to Kansas State after a two-year stint as the head coach at East Central University in Ada, Okla.

While at East Central, McCarty guided the Tigers to a 9-11 record, including a surprising 6-4 finish in his first season at the helm in 2004 on the heels of being picked last in the Lone Star Conference’s North Division that year.

McCarty coached one All-American at ECU during the 2004 campaign in defensive end Justin Brown, who was the No. 1 free agent signee of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Brown survived preseason camp until the final cut.

Prior to taking the reins at East Central, McCarty built Tabor College (Kan.), into an NAIA power from the ground up.

In his first season at Tabor in 1999, the Bluejays had just 14 players in the program and struggled through a 0-10 campaign. But improvements followed rapidly as McCarty guided Tabor to a 3-7 record in 2000, a 5-5 mark in 2001, a 6-4 ledger in 2002 and ultimately a 9-2 record in 2003 that saw the Bluejays achieve a No. 15 national ranking and the program’s first berth in the NAIA playoffs.

Following his successful 2003 campaign, McCarty was selected as the KCAC Coach of the Year as well as NAIA.net’s National Coach of the Year.

On an individual level, McCarty produced nine All-Americans, nine Academic All-Americans and over 70 conference-recognized players during his five-year tenure at Tabor.

McCarty received his coaching start as a student assistant at Fort Hays State in 1984. He moved on to Russell High School in 1995 and Hays High School in 1986 before serving a one-year graduate assistantship at Kansas in 1987.

In 1988, McCarty served as the tight ends coach at Middle Tennessee State before retuning to the state of Kansas to coach at Shawnee Mission North High School in 1989. The following season McCarty took over as the offensive coordinator at Dodge City Community College. During his four seasons with the Conquistadors from 1990-93, McCarty coached three All-Americans, 10 all-conference picks and developed two conference offensive linemen of the year.

McCarty moved on to Southwest Baptist for the 1994 season and began a four-year stint as the Bearcats’ offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. During his tenure at SBU, McCarty developed seven conference recognized lineman, including a preseason All-American. He also mentored Phil Kinney, who went on to sign a free-agent contract with the Washington Redskins.

McCarty then spent the 1998 season at Greenville (Ill.) College and constructed an offensive line that proved to be one of the best in school history. Behind three all-conference selections, McCarty’s unit helped the program set three NCAA offensive records, four conference marks and 14 school records.

McCarty, who prepped at Concordia High School, is a 1985 graduate of Fort Hays State. He was a standout defensive lineman for the Tigers and served as a team captain for FHSU’s 1983 squad that went 8-3. He went on to add a master’s of education in administration from Middle Tennessee State to his academic resume in 1994.

McCarty is married to the former Jillian Bailey of Brentwood, Tenn. The couple has two daughters, Bailey, 14, and Kendall, 12.
